- When Nothing Daunts You -

She thinks of her sometimes, when it’s late and Kirk is asleep beside her, lightly snoring in that way of his. Sometimes when it’s dark, and she’s alone with her thoughts, Catherine thinks of Mavis Marlowe.

There’s no anger anymore, nor even pity, really. There’s curiosity mostly, mixed with a bit of envy, though not because the woman had an affair with her husband.

No, on those nights, she thinks of Mavis Marlowe and the way she left her husband.

It’s easier to think of Mavis instead of Marty (that wound is still too raw, and maybe it’ll always be), and so that is what Catherine does. She surreptitiously buys her records, stashes them in the back of the closet and plays them when Kirk is gone, trying to forge a connection through a now-dead voice. She finds her photo in a newspaper, a glamorous headshot where she’s sporting a sly, knowing smile, and Catherine cuts it out like a teenager swooning over the latest Hollywood heartthrob. By all accounts, the woman was a piece of work, and they wouldn’t have been friends, but Catherine still wishes she could have met her, just once. Still longs to somehow talk to her, to ask her questions and share—if not friendship—then at least a sort of feminine camaraderie. When did she know it was time to call off her marriage and walk out? Was she worried when she did it, leaving the security of a spouse? Were her relationships after that only ever flings, or did she manage to find love with one of her admirers?

She wonders all this and more, and when Catherine finally falls asleep, she often dreams of traveling. On trains and planes, in private cars and taxi cabs. She’s never accompanied, the destination is never important, and when she hands her suitcase over to the driver or porter, it is filled, always filled.

A/N: I thought I was done writing fic for this film, but oops, I guess I’m not!

I like to imagine that Catherine’s book counterpart eventually leaves her husband, but would Catherine, herself, be able to work up the nerve to do the same? I don’t honestly know, but a gal can certainly hope.

Title taken from the song “I Want To Be Talked About,” that was featured in the film.
