He played with more flair.
Catherine supposed she shouldn’t have been surprised. Marty was a professional, after all, while Kirk had only ever played as a hobby. Still, it was strange to hear another personality coming out of the piano, to see another man sitting at the bench. Oh, it had happened before, of course—dinner parties they’d hosted, where some friend or co-worker had taken a turn at the instrument. But that had been different, in a room full of people, and Catherine had never sung along to them, besides.
To do so now with Marty, she realized, felt like a kind of betrayal.
It wasn’t, really—not in the traditional sense, at least—and anyway she was doing it for a noble cause. They needed to rehearse before Monday’s auditions. And even assuming it was a betrayal of sorts, well, wasn’t she entitled to a bit of betrayal at this point? Kirk had had his fun, hadn’t he? And there she was, trying to clean up the pieces and help him out like a good wife. It was different, she insisted. It had to be different.
Marty looked over at her, silently wondering if she was ready, and all of a sudden she wanted to know if Mavis had fooled around before she’d finally walked out on him. Wanted to know the answer, but couldn’t think of a way to actually ask the question. Instead, Catherine simply looked down at his fingers, languidly spread out across the keys, and flushed.

A/N: So I guess I write fix-it fic for classic film now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯Me, shouting back in time at the filmmakers: GIVE ME A STRONGER, MORE OBVIOUSLY CONFLICTED HEROINE, YOU COWARDS. Anyway, have you read the book? If not, just know that Catherine’s book counterpart is a hell of a lot better, pfft.
In other news, the title and summary quote are from the song “Heartbreak,” that was featured in the film.
