Notes/trivia/what-have-you:
A lot of these were picked more for sound/atmosphere than lyrical significance (though I did pay attention to that, just to a lesser degree). I really wanted them to match the overall tone of the fics, not just have applicable lyrics.
"Silent Night," the traditional Christmas carol, is Austrian in origin. (The lyrics were written by an Austrian priest, and the music by an Austrian headmaster in the early 1800s.)
"Mood Indigo." I really wanted to have a version actually performed by Duke Ellington. I also really wanted it to be an instrumental version. In theory, the original 1930 recording would have been perfect; in practice, because it's such an old recording, the sound quality is rather lacking, to say the least. There's a re-recording Ellington did in 1958, but it's a different take on the song, and just didn't quite fit. After wracking my brain about it, I finally broke down and went with Thelonius Monk’s (1955) version because, not only is it primarily a piano piece, but Monk’s style of playing was particularly esoteric and discordant, which I felt matched well with the tone of the fic. (If you’re curious, here is the best version of the original 1930 recording I could find.)
"Sing, Sing, Sing." Louis Prima wrote the song, but it was Benny Goodman’s version that really took off on the charts and made it famous. In a similar vein to “Mood Indigo,” I really wanted the actual Benny Goodman single from 1936, as that’s what would have been playing in the dance club scene of the fic. Unfortunately the shortest version that was released clocked in at 8:42, which I felt was kind of long. Ultimately I went with it, though, so there.YOU WILL TAKE ALMOST ALL NINE MINUTES OF THE BIG BAND AWESOMENESS AND YOU WILL LIKE IT. XP However, my favorite version of the song is actually a re-recording that was featured in the 1993 movie Swing Kids (starring Christian Bale and coincidentally being about the jazz counter-culture movement in pre-WWII Nazi Germany); it stays very true to Goodman’s version while obviously sounding a lot crisper than the 1936 recording.
Death Cab For Cutie actually has a song titled "Steadier Footing," which is where I took the fic title from. However, I ended up finding "Passenger Seat" more fitting/inspirational to listen to when writing, hence why that one made it onto the FST.
So, there you have it! Again, I do apologize for the long wait, and I would absolutely ADORE a comment if you happen to download it. You know, to let me know what you thought. (I know I say this with every FST, but I really mean it this time, please please please! :D)
