My first exposure to him was probably the rhinestone suits and the impersonations you mention, but enough tidbits and factoids about him filtered in over the years (the one mentioned in the fic included) to thankfully temper my knowledge. One of my favorite little anecdotes is how, when asked for his political opinion on something (I think it might have been the Vietnam War?), he declined to answer with something along the lines of, "I'm just an entertainer, ma'am." Very tactful and graceful.
