I think they're just a very hard pairing to get "right," you know? And I don't mean to sound arrogant with that, but being that they're one of the few canon couples (maybe the only, if you don't count Sweden/Finland due to Finland's reluctance), I think it's very easy to just look at the whole "Oh, they were married! :D" and write them off as this happy couple.
But as I got into Hetalia for the history (I was already a history nerd, and now I'm even moreso XD), that's generally what I concentrate on (or at least have as a backdrop) in my fics, and the actual history of the two countries...isn't that great, really. I think I mentioned it before in some other story comment, but reconciling that happy, romantic canon portrayal with the pretty damn hostile history is a fascinating challenge for me.
